Transportation & Biking around Tanesashi

Hi everyone!

It’s Arthur again. Today, I am going to talk about how I commute to Tanesashi.

The most used method of transportation within the Aomori Prefecture is the car. Practically everyone has a car and uses it for their daily commute. However, owning a car is costly and unfortunately something I can not afford with my student budget. Whenever a friend offers a ride to Tanesashi in the morning, I obviously accept, especially for days with bad weather such as today which is very rainy.

Another method is by train. I am lucky to live next to a train station and can use them to quickly travel across the city and coast. It is important to check the timetable for the trains as they do not run very often. I use them often on my way back home when I get dropped by car in the morning, however, I can not use them in the morning as the timing would make me arrive one hour and a half early.

Therefore, I resort to biking. I have about a 40 min ride each way. On rainy days like this it is a bit discouraging, but it also allows for a different perspective on the same usual scenery. The clouds envelop the sky, turning the trees and grass darker. The puddles dance at each droplet that lands, the sea becomes flat and gives an emotional and nostalgic feeling to the once sunny and summery Tanesashi we had over the weekend.

When biking from Hachinohe to Tanesashi, there are two option. Starting from Same station, you can ride up the mountain to the Same shobo (fire department) and ride within the mountains and forest. This is the shortest route in distance but proves to be quite a challenge as it goes up and down. The second option would be longer but allows for a more scenic ride as you cycle along the coast, passing by Kabushima shrine and Samekado lighthouse. This route also has less arduous incline which would be simpler for many. The first time I rode through the first option of Same shodo, it was so steep that I decided to walk and push my bike instead of riding it.

I would recommend cycling around this area as the nature is astounding and offers for a fun bike ride. My advice would just be to check the weather forecast and avoid rainy days. Have fun :)
