I am Arthur from France doing job experience and getting training here in Tanesashi Coast Information Center.
I am staying at Hachinohe and was craving some outdoor activities to exercise and experience something different from the city. I came to Tanesashi Coast for the first time on January 18th to discover a magnificent beach covered in snow. A sight I saw for the first time that I will hardly forget. This place piqued my interest and I’ve come back a few times since then.
Are you also near Hachinohe and looking for some nature and a bit of activities? Then let’s dive into the activities you can do here!
Natural wonders
This coast is a natural park and the nature is strongly protected which I was able to observe right upon my arrival. Beautiful trees run along the coast hiding behind them the sparkling Pacific Ocean. This national park holds a large amount of wildlife and a variety of marine species which are all documented at the Tanesashi Coast Information Center. As an example, there are more than 650 species of flowers found within the park which are all photographed and shown.
Another aspect I love are the skies during sunrises and sunsets. If you are up for the challenge of getting up early, you will have a direct view on the stunning sunrise emerging from the sea. However, if you did not wake up on time, don’t fret. On a bright moon night, the scenery is also one for sore eyes. If you get close to the water, the reflection of the moon will shine on the ocean and arrive to your feet, creating a straight path to the moon.
Exploring the coast by foot
Coming here was a breath of fresh air for me and I hope it will be for you too. A simple walk along the beach is very relaxing and does not need any preparations. There are also restaurants and cafeterias along the road if you are in need of a break or forgot to bring a bento for a picnic. Nonetheless, if you came in the hopes of challenging yourself, you are also in luck. Trekking along the coast of this natural reserve is very famous and the entire hike is 1000km and can take 45 days at shortest term.
During winter, the prefecture of Aomori is always subject to large amounts of snow. The coast is not an exception as beaches will turn white with your local high school’s baseball club training on them. As snow accumulates and walking becomes harder, I recommend snowshoeing or cross-country skiing to still exercise while taking in the view.
In search of more activities?
If walking is not your preferred activity, there is the alternative of biking which is pretty safe from my experience. I had to bike a few times on the road and cars would be careful when overtaking me. When biking, there are alternative routes that head more inland for a change of sceneries which are splendid. Bikes can be rented through “AC promote” and “Tanesashi Kanko Kyokai”. “AC promote” also offer a camping experience on the seashore to experience the nature to its fullest as well as local food.
For those avid of sensations and sea lovers, there is the possibility to kayak into the ocean and view Hachinohe’s and Tanesashi’s coast from a different perspective. Nevertheless, due to strong winds in spring, it is best to take precautions and head out with someone how is familiar with the area. A different option would be surfing. The best period would be during summer but if you are up for the challenge, try it out in winter
Finally, this is a region of Japan that has taken me by surprise and that I now hold dear to me. The people are sweet and there are lots of activities to be done. Whether you travel with friends or alone, you are bound to meet new people and make lasting memories. There are lots of spots to visit, each with more beautiful sceneries than the previous, but also lots of active events available for you to join. Come over here and have some fun!
